A day centre for adults with mental handicaps

While vocational training and jobs are the best option for most of the world’s disabled people – 90% of whom fall into the mild to moderate categories – there are people who will always require round the clock care. But just because a person is dependent on others for care does not mean she does not need a daily routine which is stimulating and enjoyable. People with severe disabilities need and look forward to social interactions, planned activities and meeting friends and other new people. While school meets this need for children, for adults who are unable to work after leaving school, a day centre – or a club, if you will - may be the answer.

The Foundation intends to open such a club in the near future, designed to meet the needs of adults with severe mental and physical disabilities. As in school, there will be a variety of activities to give structure to the day, but unlike in school, these activities will be more “in the moment” and not linked to a specific educational program. Regular music and storytelling, dance, craft and exercise will be built into the day and volunteers from the community will be encouraged to come and spend time with club members.
