Karuna Vihar means “Garden of Compassion” and it refers to the Foundation’s projects which deal specifically with services to children and young adults with disabilities: the Early Intervention Centre, the School and the Centre for Vocational Training. “Compassion” is a loaded term in an age which prefers to look at disability from a rights-based perspective, but we stick with it stubbornly because it speaks to our own experience of “feeling with others”. The bedrock of all we do is a firm belief in the rights of people with disability to full inclusion in the community. But it is compassion which has made us understand that we all have disabilities and we all have rights. It is compassion which has made us recognize how much we have to learn from those whose vulnerabilities are more evident than others. And it is compassion which makes what we do a joy and not a task.
