One of the most important things we teach at the CVT is self-reliance. Although as teachers and as parents, we often have the urge to protect our children, particularly those with disabilities, at the CVT, we actively resist it. Difficult as it is to let go, we have found that these young adults are far more capable than we give them credit for. Many of our trainees now come to school independently, using public transport. Some are able to shop on their own, cook a full meal, entertain guests and take care of their own personal needs. Far from being a burden in their homes, many of our trainees are depended upon in their families for their domestic contributions. They take pride in keeping their houses spotless and their gardens neat and tidy. Indeed, the CVT building and grounds are the best maintained in the entire foundation! |
