who needs play?

Who needs play? We all do. But children need it more than anyone.

Educationists and psychologists have told us for years that play is crucial for a child’s development. Froebel, in his classic text, “The Education of Man”, said play was vital because of the sensory experiences it offers; experiences he believed were the foundation of a child’s cognitive development. In play, children explore new concepts, objects and skills in an enjoyable, non-threatening way. Through play, they get the chance to master the skills they require to live in the world: because play is not subject to the same rules as other activities, children are free to repeat their games over and over again, in seemingly pointless fashion, because the point of play is actually to have fun!

In play, children try out different roles and can often resolve inner conflicts and anxieties (a new baby in the family for example, or a hospitalization) in the process. Social skills are acquired through play. Taking turns, being a part of a team, developing judgment and learning to accept that life is a series of two-way interactions are just a few of these vital skills.

Confidence in their own abilities and mastery over themselves both physically and mentally are factors which profoundly influence a child’s future. Through unrestricted and unthreatening play opportunities, children can develop in both these areas. At the same time, they begin to explore both their limitations and their potential, as well as to recognize the importance and the charm of spontaneity and flexibility.

As one researcher put it: “Play is the child’s main business in life; through play he learns the skills to survive and to find some pattern in the confusing world into which he was born.”
