In spite of the universal need to play, not every child can. While the human brain is hard-wired to play, some children still need help to do it. A child who has a physical disability, for example, and cannot crawl or walk, will miss out on a whole range of essential experiences because she cannot explore her environment on her own. If she sees an object that interests her and she cannot get to it, she will not only miss out on the process of discovering what it is (how it tastes, what it feels like, whether it bites, whether it squeals), she will also develop a sense of frustration and hopelessness at her inability to control her world. Children with visual handicaps, hearing deficits or cognitive delay will have similar negative experiences.
At Latika Vihar, we put a lot of energy into helping kids with disabilities join in the fun. Our staff are trained to include everyone, especially those who don’t know how much they are missing. As parents and caring adults, it is our responsibility to bridge the gap for children with disabilities. We help them to play by bringing the world to them because without our help, they cannot develop as they should. It’s that simple. And if it sounds a lot like fun and games, that’s exactly right! |
